Individual Therapy

These are one-on-one sessions in a private setting at Dr. Underwood's Brentwood or Nolensville office.  Sessions are also available via video through a live HIPAA-approved software application.  Dr. Underwood handles all sessions personally within his practice.

Adolescent Therapy

Adolescents with behavioral disorders or mental illnesses can't be expected to resolve these issues by themselves. It takes the expertise of a knowledgeable, compassionate therapist to guide them through these tough experiences.  One-on-one individual therapy gives adolescents the opportunity to speak openly about their experiences in a nonjudgmental, confidential, safe setting. Dr. Underwood has the experience necessary to encourage adolescents to share feelings within the context of a safe environment.

Group Therapy

Group psychotherapy is a form of treatment in which a small number of people, usually 5-8, meet together on a weekly basis. Dr. Underwood personally facilitates the weekly meeting which provides an opportunity for individuals to process, receive support, and experience accountability. In each of the small groups, group participants are given the opportunity to experience genuine acceptance with confidentiality, a safe environment, and healthy emotional/relational intimacy, without judgment.  Click here for answers to some common questions about group therapy.

Couples Therapy

Couples counseling is a process through which a couple (who may be dating, engaged, married or partnered) works with a trained therapist to identify specific areas of strengths, conflict and/or aspects of their relationship that they would like to change or improve upon.  Working with Dr. Underwood, clients find a safe and confidential setting, where as a couple, they are able to explore how their individual backgrounds, beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors may be impacting their relationship in both healthy and unhealthy ways. Dr. Underwood assists the couple with addressing any immediate and pressing problems or crises as well as developing strategies for protecting and enhancing the long-term health and gratification of their relationship.

Counseling goals for couples might include, enhancing communication skills, improving problem-solving skills, resolving conflict, understanding the dynamics of a healthy relationship, and experiencing emotional and sexual intimacy.

Equine Assisted Therapy

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) provides a powerful experience for "real time" interaction and reflections of successes and challenges.  Horses are sensitive to non-verbal communication and respond to messages they feel from clients in the moment.  The responses from the horses become familiar to the responses experienced from spouses, co-workers, and family members, and the way clients see themselves. The interaction with the horse or horses is on the ground (non-riding).

These sessions take place at Underwood Farm in Nolensville, TN.  Click here for more details.
